Introduction
Springtails (Collembola) are tiny soil dwellers that control mould and cycle nutrients in bioactive setups. They pair well with isopod colonies and terrariums.
Housing a culture
A ventilated 32 oz (~950 ml) deli cup works great. Use a lid with pinholes or a vented deli lid so humidity stays up but air still moves.
Substrate
Charcoal and clay mix, or fine coconut coir, kept consistently moist like a wrung-out sponge. Springtails live in the top layer; depth does not matter much.
Temperature & humidity
- Temperature: 18–24°C (65–75°F)
- Humidity: 80%+. They dry out fast.
Feeding
Staple: Brewer's yeast, a tiny pinch 1–2× per week.
Alternatives: Mushroom, fish flakes, rice (cooked or uncooked, sparingly). A little mould in the cup is normal; back off food if it takes over.
Introducing to isopod enclosures
When the culture is going (springtails on the lid and substrate surface), tip a spoonful of substrate into the damp side of an isopod tub.
- Temperate species (Folsomia candida): Porcellio, Armadillidium, and other temperate setups.
- Tropical species (Sinella curviseta): Cubaris and humid tropical tubs.
Common issues
- Culture crashed / no springtails visible: Too dry. Mist now and wait 1–2 weeks for eggs to hatch.
- Overpopulation: Good problem. Share cultures or seed more tubs.
- Mould bloom: Normal in small amounts; feed less if it gets out of hand.
