Understanding the Sinella genus
Sinella is a genus of tropical springtails commonly sold as "tropical white" cultures. Sinella curviseta tolerates the warm, humid conditions inside Cubaris enclosures better than temperate Folsomia candida.
Like all springtails, Sinella graze on mould and micro-fungi, keeping leaf litter surfaces clean. They are slightly larger and more heat-loving than Folsomia, which matches Southeast Asian isopod husbandry.
Cultures behave similarly — charcoal substrate, moisture, and yeast — but should be kept warmer for peak reproduction.
Why Sinella is popular in the hobby
Cubaris keepers learned early that temperate springtails sometimes struggle in hot, wet tubs. Tropical Sinella cultures fill that gap, staying active alongside Rubber Ducky and panda morphs without crashing in summer heat.
They are increasingly stocked alongside temperate cultures so keepers can match springtail species to isopod climate.
Habitat, care, and collection appeal
Maintain cultures at 22–28 °C with high humidity. Introduce to tropical isopod setups the same way as Folsomia — a spoonful of inoculated substrate on the moist leaf-litter layer.
Pair with magnolia and oak litter in Cubaris tubs for a complete Southeast Asian bioactive profile. For collectors, Sinella is a small but critical piece of tropical specialty husbandry.
