About this species
Zebra Isopods (Armadillidium maculatum) are one of the most recognizable isopods in the hobby thanks to their bold black-and-white striping. They are hardy, prolific, and roll into a tight ball when disturbed, making them a brilliant first 'conglobating' species. Great as display animals and as a clean-up crew in bioactive enclosures.
- Size:
- ~18 mm
- Enclosure:
- A plastic bin or glass terrarium with good ventilation; they prefer a drier setup with a damp area.
- Diet:
- Leaf litter, decaying wood, and vegetables, plus a protein source. Calcium is important for these conglobating (roly-poly) species.
- Temperature Range:
- Maintain temperatures between 65 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Reproduction:
- Moderately prolific with medium broods; steady and reliable once established.
- Substrate:
- Coconut coir, peat moss, or topsoil with added limestone and leaf litter, kept on the drier side with a moist corner.
- Humidity:
- Lower to moderate humidity with good ventilation. Mist one side for a gradient. Do not keep the whole tub wet.
